Lumberjack Jacques And The Ritual Of Doom 1
CLUSTERTRUCK (Previously called ) is a spectacularly chaotic first person platformer in which you have to leapfrog between a herd of stampeding 18 wheelers with an aim of reaching the finish line without touching the ground. The aim is simple – reach the finish line without touching the ground. However, the way you reach the finish line is by standing atop (and jumping between) a herd of trucks that are careering out of control. Make no bones about it this is not a convoy – there’s some semblance of order to a convoy – this is a stampede, a herd of 18 wheelers that have lost their shit and are charging for the finish line, with no though for their own safety (or those around them). The random chaos of CLUSTERTRUCK is a joy to behold, with trucks colliding, rolling, jumping and flipping before your very eyes (and under your feet). This randomness means you can’t memorize routes or plan more than a few seconds ahead, so success relies on quick thinking, skill and fast reflexes. It’s no big deal if you do fail though, as the quick restarts mean you can jump instantly back into the action, and you do have some nifty wall-running and slowmotion skills at your disposal.Even in these early Alpha stages of development, CLUSTERTRUCK is a joy to play – a chaotic, infectious and thoroughly addictive first person platformer that’s different every time you play it.

New IdeasThe Making ofChapter 1: Adventure'sNew NameAfter the successof Raiders of the LostArk George Lucas decided to continue hisvision for the recreation of the adventure serialsof the past. Following the course of TheEmpire Strikes Back, the second installmentin his Star Warssaga, this would be a journey to the dark side.Spielberg and Lucas.Lucas had presented his idea forthe second film to Spielberg and he had expressedinterest so as in November 1981 he would say toAmerican Cinematographer:'I loved the experience of filming Raiders.I don't know if it was the good fortune I enjoyedon this particular adventure, but I'm anxiousto work again overseas. I'm definitely going todirect the sequel to Raiders.I had such a good time making the first one thatI would hate to let the second one slip throughmy fingers into somebody else's hands. I'll certainlynot be involved in the third or fourth one, butI really want to do the follow up, because thenew story is even more spectacular than Raidersof the Lost Ark'. Still he waitedfor a script to sign a contract. With Lawrence Kasdan unavailable, since he had begun a career as director, makinghis first feature film BodyHeat, Lucas approached his AmericanGraffiti co-writers, Gloria Katz and WillardHuyck in February 1982. He invited the coupleand Spielberg at his ranch for their first meetingthat lasted four days. In the first hour Lucasdescribed what he had in mind.
The title was IndianaJones and the Temple of Death and the storywould start in Shanghai, a year before Raidersand their lost Ark quest. Indy would get intoa situation where his plane crashes. Then he'sasked by a village to help them recover a sacredstone. That was the basic outline that Lucas had,and they all started building from there.
Lucasalso wanted a child in the movie, a virginal youngprincess but the rest of the company didn't feelcomfortable with the idea and came up with a 10-yearold Chinese boy. The idea of the little boy leadto another idea about a young Maharajah and thatto a story about kidnapped children.Spielberg thought the title wastoo gloomy and proposed the word doom insteadof death, which Lucas accepted. For this secondfilm they decided to go to the opposite directionRaiders took,so appearances from Sallah and Marcus Brody weredismissed. 'The danger in making a sequel',said Spielberg, 'is that you can never satisfyeveryone. If you give people the same movie withdifferent scenes, they say 'Why weren't you moreoriginal?' But if you give them the same characterin another fantastic adventure, but with a differenttone, you risk disappointing the other half ofthe audience who just wanted a carbon copy ofthe first film with a different girl and a differentbad guy. So you win and you lose both ways.'
Indy's new companion was to be a blond bubblehead who spends most of her time squealing andcomplaining. Being the very image of Marion Ravenwoodher only resemblance to that character was thatshe becomes entangled in Indy's exploits by circumstancesbeyond her control. But throughout the film sheis changed and by its end she's really a differentperson.Since Indy had got his name afterLucas' dog the writing couple found it funny toname their new characters after theirs. So theynamed Indy's ten-year-old sidekick Short Roundafter their fifteen-year-old Sheltie and his newgirl after Spielberg's Cocker Spaniel Willie.Continuing playing with their characters' namesthey named the film's two villains after 17th-centuryIndian painters.Ford was eager to step into Indy'sshoes again and stated to Starlogmagazine: 'Of course I'm doing the secondRaiders film. With great pleasure. Steven Spielberg is goingto direct it.
So this is very exciting for me.It was one of the best working relationship experiencesof my life working with Steven.' As timepassed Spielberg was getting involved in otherprojects and started making statements like: 'Morethan likely, I will not direct but closely superviseit, almost as a co-producer, with George'.Knowing that Spielberg would not wait foreverLucas took the two writers aside and warned them:'I'm afraid we might lose him, so you guysbetter get this done fast'. WritersWillard Huyckand Gloria Katz. The first draft of the script wasready after six weeks and Lucas was enthusiasticfrom the outcome and so was Spielberg who signedfor the film.
'I can see it already',he said. As Willard Huyck noted in Charles Champlin'sGeorge Lucas: The CreativeImpulse 'Steven was amazed, he couldn'tget out of it because we did it so fast'.The script's second draft took another six weekswhile the third was ready after a month. 'Thathappened over an eight-month period of time',said Huyck. 'We went off to do BestDefense.
Steve would call us continuallyto make changes. There were some budgetary restrictions, and some ideas which came to him as he went tothe locations, things he wanted incorporated intothe script'. After some more revisions thescript went to Harrison Ford, who suggested addingmore humor and character refinement in certainscenes.
What Ford did not like was Lucasfilm'sannouncement that they were planning a total offive Indy films. 'They must be talking toRoger Moore then', was Ford's comment. 'Ienjoy him very much but it's one at a time forme'. Ford was afraid of being typecast asan action hero and not a real actor. Besides, every picture he had starred in had begun to developfollow-ups and the idea of becoming the 'Kingof sequels' wasn't welcomed either.Since Lucas wanted this film tobe really scary, the villains had to be nothinglike the Nazis or the suave Belloq of Raiders,so the writers adopted the villains of GeorgeSteven's 1939 version of the Rudyard Kipling poemGunga Din, theThugs. They were a sub-group among devotees ofKali, the goddess of Death, and they practicedritual strangling - Thuggee - as a form of worship.Silent and anonymous traveling the roads of India, murdering travelers and burring them with theirritual pickaxes; the Thugs kept their sect andpractices secret for centuries. Renaming them'Thuggees' or, in some versions, 'Thuggies',and marring them with other cultural customs likeAztec cardiectomy, Hawaiian volcano sacrificeand European devil worship, Huyck and Katz cameup with what they thought would be the ultimatevillains. While the villains of the film gotmore and more dark Indy's character was comingmore and more light.
This time around Indy's motivationwould not be for the sake of archaeology nor forthe artifacts themselves but for the freedom ofenslaved children. This time Indy would show thathe's not just a fortune hunter going after lostartifacts but a more kind person who cares forothers.Indy II,as it was the film's working title, would containmany violence, human sacrifices, hearts been pluckedout, pointing out that Indy had started shiftingaway from thirties nostalgia towards eightiesviolence.Gong storyboard sketch. Many of the sequences that weredropped during the making of Raidersproved to be valuable for the development of thenew script. Originally Lawrence Kasdan had theheadpiece of the staff of Ra broken up in twopieces the one obtained by Marion and the otherby General Hok, an evil Chinese warlord settledin Shanghai. Leaving the United States Indy wouldtravel to Shanghai and break into Hok's fortress. There he would face two imposing Samurais. Byshooting one of them and strangling the otherIndy would manage to remain undetected. With oneof the fallen Samurai's sword he would break theglass cabinet containing the artifact and setoff an alarm system part of which is a ten-diametergong.
General Hok would enter the place wieldinga machine gun and begin firing indiscriminately.Indy would manage to unhook the gong and rollit across the hall using it as a shield. The sheerweight of the gong would crack the marble flooringoffering Indy an escape. This scene, showing amore dark character of Indiana Jones, was cutfrom script due to cost saving. The new film beginswith Indiana Jones meeting singer Willie Scottduring his negotiations with the Chinese mafiain a pre-war Chinese nightclub called The Dragon.Continuing the in-jokes tradition that Raidersfound, the nightclub's name was soon changed intoObi Wan. Alec Guinness' character from StarWars. This scene was also the fulfillmentof George Lucas' past wish to present a tuxedowearing Indiana Jones. Trimotorstoryboard.Another scene that didn't make itfrom the Raidersscript was Indy's flight to Nepal.
On leavingShanghai Indy would take a DC-3 to Nepal to findMarion. On board there would be the usual complementof passengers: a few tourists, a little old lady, and some Asians en route home. But it would beall an elaborate trap and while Indy sleeps everyoneonboard would grab every available parachute andjump out of the airplane. Indy would wake anddiscover the cockpit locked and the plane on acollision course with a mountain. Pulling outa rubber life raft, he would wrap it around hisbody, leap from the plane, pull the inflate cordin midair and land safely on the snowy Himalayanpeaks. Using the raft as a sled Indy would ridedown the slopes all the way to Marion's bar.
Thescene was incorporated in IndyII following Indiana's escape from Shanghaiand was modified in mid-production at Spielberg'srequest, transforming the script's passenger planeinto a cargo craft and adding a clutch of chickensto the payload.Mine-cart storyboard.A third scene cut from Raiderswas in the film's climax. After Belloq's deathIndy and Marion load the Ark on a mine car andtry to find a way out, as the whole place is setablaze. What follows is a wild chase in the darkmine tunnels as they are pursued by a group ofNazis. The race between the cars seems unfairsince our heroes' car does not work properly. In the nick of time the car's throttle works andit accelerates its speed rapidly, leaving theNazis engulfed by flames.
Reaching the rail'send the couple finds a small Nazi transport launchcarefully disguised as a Greek fishing boat. Inthe next shot the boat is chugging out to seaas the island rumbles and shakes. For this newfilm the concept of the mine car was consideredfirst as a small scene only to become one of thefilm's greatest set pieces.Next: Thissite is in no way affiliated with Lucasfilm Ltd.
