For those unfamiliar with the game, was a well reviewed episodic noire adventure game taking place in a light steampunk alternative history version of 1950s Chicago. The story follows Elliot Ness in his attempt to rescue Al Capone's granddaughter from a Lovecraftian cult, puzzling out grotesque serial killer tableaus and shooting his way through mobsters along the way.It was developed in Spain by Crowd of Monsters, known for releasing a blacksploitation themed mobile platformer, and stars Geralt of Rivia's voice actor, Doug Cockle. After it passed through Steam Greenlight, the first episode came out for PC in June 2015, and was later also published on X-Box One and PS4.
It has a Metacritic rating of 73-86, depending on the version, and was.Six months after the debut, the second episode was released, and the developer announced that future episodes would be available for purchase individually. Little did season pass holders know, but this was likely because the game, and the studio ran out of money to continue development. Contractors such as artists and modelers were laid off first, and then the core 5 man development team was cut down to 2, revealed through employees' accounts. Crowd of Monsters' current profile is devoid of any employees at all.It would be another nine months before Crowd of Monsters would comment officially on the game's status, prompted by rumors of cancellation on and the game's, after terminated employees complained to inquiring fans. The company communicated via tweet:'We are passing through difficult times, but the game is not cancelled.
If we cancel it we will advice, don't worry.' Despite outright saying the game is not cancelled, given that the team is down to two individuals with no cash, it isn't likely that the series will continue.
Fans who bought the season pass are raising questions about how they'll be compensated, and the game has started a discussion on Steam and other forums about the legality and ethics of episodic games, and whether regulations should be created and enforced to clearly define risks and responsibilities. For example, how much time should be allowed to pass between episodes before a consumer is entitled to a refund? If a promised product isn't finished, is it the fault of the buyer for purchasing the season pass, or is the developer still responsible for failing to deliver a promised good?Other episodic games have also been cancelled and hung out in the past, but I can't think of one that did that where the developer offered an up front season pass and didn't have the capability to deliver on it.
Telltale has had 4 month gaps between episodic releases, SiN Episodes was canned after the first release following the studio's buyout, and Sonic 4 was a mess. But Telltale has completed every project, and no other games have charged customers for content they would never deliver. The closest recent comparison I can think of for this situation would be Arkham Origins and Arkham Knight, where the games were released with game breaking bugs and major technical problems that were never fixed or resolved, as Rocksteady and Warner Bros. Montreal moved on from fixing serious issues to focus on developing paid DLC for their broken games. The fact that their series is episodic is the only reason that people were able to play the content that is Ep.1 and 2. So it was either go episodic and hopefully stay afloat to release all of em, or not make anything at all since they couldn't make a full game. I really don't understand your logic.
And I have a lot of games I've bought for the sole purpose to support the devs because they created interesting/unique ideas that I would like to see more of. I'm not concerned about funding the game itself, I'm concerned about funding the devs that made something I recognize as being worth my investment. The game has started a discussion on Steam and other forums about the legality and ethics of episodic games,I imagine that is a shitshow of idiocy and ignoranceAs for the rest of that post.
Treat it the same way you treat any other game. Don't buy until you are getting content that you feel is worth the price you are paying. Never buy based on 'all the mods that will be made for it' or 'they'll add these features soon'.And if you are preordering, do it in a system that provides you with some protections (Steam gives refunds now) and stick to established studios that you are willing to take a risk on. That's a somewhat naive and reductionist. With steam refunds, there really is no longer a significant reason to NOT pre-order a game you want if you can get a good deal. All you'll be out if it tanks is an hour or so of your time. And in return, you often get 'free' DLC and hopefully a discount.Personally, I still don't pre-order often. Mostly because my gaming backlog is so full that there is no point. But the Church of Biscuit 'Never Preorder a game' is an outdated notion. Now, this is obviously different from Season Passes and the like as those still have a risk attached to them.
But you can also gauge that pretty well based on the quality of the core game and maybe the first DLC.
